Once the temperatures really start to heat up across KELOLAND, outdoor enthusiasts will be out taking advantage of the nicer days. That means people will be out jogging, and biking along the greenway trails in Sioux Falls. But, for those headed out on the trails this summer, keep your eyes peeled for trail closures due to construction.
Even with temps in the 50's and not a ray of sun in sight, joggers and bikers are still taking advantage of the miles and miles of trails that circle Sioux Falls.
"You don't have to worry about traffic, it's quite, it's nice,” Bike rider, Kevin Fox, said.
"We probably ride, 4, 5, days a week, maybe, 20 miles a time,” Bicyclist Mike Houk said.
But, a section of the Greenway trails will be closed off starting in July. About a 2 miles stretch from 41st street to the Westward Ho Golf Bridge will be closed to allow construction for US Army Corps of Engineers Flood Control Project.
The project would better protect homes and businesses in the city from major flood events.
In all, construction here will last about a year and a half, forcing those who use the trails to run, walk, or bike somewhere else. The City has mapped out alternative routes on sidewalks and streets. Some bikers are worried about that transition.
"(I) worry about the lights stopping and starting,” Fox said.
"I think the detours need to take us through a little safer situations, around town, sometimes we're crossing very, very busy streets, I think that could be very unhealthy and unsafe for the bikers,” Houk said.
Mike Hauk hopes planners work out the kinks before the orange cones go up. And even when they do, he says he's willing to add the extra miles to enjoy the outdoors.
"We'll do what we have to do, because we really love to ride,” Houk said.
The portion of the trail that will be closed is about 2 miles. The detour is about 4 miles. The project is slated to begin this july, and finished by November 2010.
