RV campers on Sioux Falls' west side may get to stay after all.
Last week, we told you about five families who live in their RV's and campers at the Westwick campground on West 12th Street. They received eviction notices because of a city ordinance that says campers can't be parked at a campground for more than 30 days.
But the city is now rewriting that portion of the law. Still, there appears to be another problem that could force them to leave.
The city council is looking at removing the 30-day restriction to its campground ordinance but that still won't help David Fritz who owns the Westwick Motel and Campground.
He says the problem is the line in the ordinance requiring a side yard of 50 feet and a front yard of 100 feet. Fritz says his campground only has about 35 feet.
"Well, 50 feet from the side that would eliminate all but four of my campsites," Fritz said.
City council members say they want to work with Fritz so his tenants don't have to leave but they also want to do what's best for the city.
"I sometimes think we might be reacting or even over reacting," council member De Knudson said.
"There's all kind of folks in situations with these things and I'd hate to pass sweeping judgement on them, banish this type of living arrangement temporary as most of those are, " council member Bob Litz said.
The city planning department is still working on the final draft of the ordinance, but the city council could vote on it sometime this month, so those campers won't have to leave.
