He's racked up a record number of wins, a lot of fans and a great recovery story too.
And that story is still being told around the country. A crew from the national CBS News was in Aberdeen Friday to feature Northern State basketball coach Don Meyer.
"It has a great sort of inspirational appeal, his story," CBS reporter Mark Strassmann said.
It's a story well know by the locals. As Meyer was drawing closer to becoming the winningest coach in NCAA men’s basketball history, he was in a serious car accident and also found out he had cancer. Despite the obstacles, he coached last season and is back to add to his record.
Strassmann covers national news and isn't surprised his story assignment brings him to Aberdeen, South Dakota and NSU's Don Meyer.
"Here's a guy who's done it the right way and has had such great success and through his own personal example has inspired others and taught others. And to me that's the sort of story that deserves national attention," Strassmann said.
But the man with the name connected to the story probably won't tell you the same.
"Well it's been a slow news year, you know what I mean," Meyer said.
Though he jokes about it, Meyer says he is thankful for the attention. The exposure it brings to NSU and the community appeals to him like his inspirational one does to so many others.
"People who are so well known for all the right reasons in one area really deserve to be better known in other areas," Strassmann said.
Strassmann has met several of those through his career, at least one right here in Aberdeen.
CBS hasn't set an air date for the Meyer story yet. But one date you can mark on your calendars is Monday the 9th. That's the Wolves first exhibition game.
