Children in three KELOLAND communities are protecting themselves from the H1N1 flu Thursday. The vaccine is free and all comes from the state, but rules about who can receive it differ depending on where you go.
In Vermillion, the H1N1 vaccine is available for any child between 6-months and 4-years-old. Any child is welcome and it doesn't matter where you live.
In Rapid City, it's only available at specific day cares. Children can be up to 5-years-old and it's first come first serve.
And in Sioux Falls, children can only get the shot if they got an invitation. But the restrictions seem to be working at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds.
We arrived around 2:30 p.m. and the parking lot at the Expo Building was full, but the rain kept people in their cars until the doors opened at 3 p.m. Since then, the line inside has stayed long. Parents who received letters from their day care had to show them at the door. So far, only a few people who don't meet the guidelines laid out by the state have been turned away. This clinic was given 2,000 doses and when the doors close at 7 p.m., health officials hope they have zero left over.
"After this event is done, we want to have used all the doses that are available. That gets the doses into the community, builds the immunity of the community faster," Minnehaha County Emergency Management Director Lynn DeYoung said.
If there are doses left over, they'll be sent back to the state health department and then re-allocated to other clinics around the state.
