Walkers and runners will lace up their shoes this weekend to to help South Dakotans fighting breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen race got its start in Dallas, Texas in the 1980's. It came to South Dakota last year, raising more than $200,000.  Organizers hope to bring in even more donations this weekend in Vermillion.  Many of the walkers and runners have personal connections to the disease, including KELOLAND News reporter Erica Johnson.

"I'm going to walk because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and I saw exactly what she went through and it was terrible. I can't imagine, I mean, just the pain, and being tired. And to see her go through that, I knew I wanted to kind of take action and do something," Johnson said.

All of the donations stay local. The money goes toward education and support for breast cancer survivors.

If you want to sign up for the race, you're still in luck. Registration starts at 7 a.m. Sunday morning at the Dakota Dome in Vermilion. You can also tune in Sunday night at 10 p.m. to hear from a breast cancer survivor and watch her emotional journey through the walk.
