An increasing number of women diagnosed with breast cancer are taking the radical step of having their healthy breast removed to prevent cancer.

  • Multiple tumors in the original breast.
  • An original tumor that started in the milk-producing lobes and spread like seeds.
  • A high breast cancer risk according to age, race and family history. 

Many welcome any new information that helps them better understand the hand they've been dealt. 

"I feared that it would come back. I feared that it would spread," Cochran said. 

Although this may help women make that difficult decision, some doctors are concerned about unnecessary mastectomies, pointing out that chemotherapy and hormone therapy is a good alternative to surgery.

Obesity Linked To Ovarian Cancer

Obese women are carrying around more than extra pounds. They have an increased chance of getting a certain kind of cancer. 


There is new incentive for obese women to lose weight. Researchers say the risk of developing ovarian cancer is much higher for ladies over 50 who are overweight. 



In a recent study, researchers looked at women who have never taken menopausal hormone replacement therapy. 



They followed almost 95,000 American women between the ages of 50 and 71.

Many Women May Be Undergoing Unnecessary Procedure

Millions of women may be undergoing an unnecessary procedure to determine whether they have breast cancer.
Every year up to two million women are told their mammogram is abnormal. The next step is biopsy. And now a new report from the College of Surgeons warns that many women are undergoing a much more extensive biopsy - than is necessary. 



More than a third of women with abnormal mammogram results may be undergoing surgery they don't need.

Diabetes Drugs Linked To Fractures

There's a connection between two popular diabetes drugs and broken bones. Researchers found women with type two diabetes who took Avandia and Actos doubled their risk of fractures.

The Silver Lining Of Migraines

A new study shows that those painful piercing headaches may have a silver lining. Researchers found that women with a history of severe migraines have a 30 percent lower risk of getting breast cancer. 



This preliminary study couldn't determine the exact connection, but doctors believe it has to do with hormones.

Study Finds Frequency Of Teen Vaccine Use

The first look at how well the human papillomavirus vaccine was accepted by parents is in. The study comes just one year after the Gardasil vaccine was recommended for girls ages 11 to 12. 


In a survey, parents of 3,000 teens were asked about their child's vaccination histories. Just more than 25 percent of girls aged 13 to17 had at least started the three-shot HPV vaccination series. 



Health officials recommend that girls get the shots when they're 11 or 12---before they become sexually active.
