As farmers try to get into their fields to harvest crops, deer are moving out and onto area roads and that could be dangerous for drivers.
Deer running in front of cars is happening all too often in KELOLAND.
"They can do some unpredictable things," Capt. Kevin Joffer said.
In just two days, troopers have been called to 8 accidents involving deer and that number is rising. South Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer says now is the time when they see more deer than usual.
"The farmers weren't in the field for a while with all the rain but now that they're back in the field, it seems like they're on the move again," Joffer said.
On the move and onto area roads.
"They'll run out of the ditches, they'll run out of the sides of your car. It almost looks like sometimes they'll run right at the headlights," Joffer said.
Accidents aren't just happening on the Interstate. Authorities say hitting a deer can happen anytime you're behind the wheel.
"Highway Patrol, Sheriff's office, we are all dealing with an increase call for service on car versus deer accidents so they're all over," Joffer said.
Joffer says you can avoid an accident by not driving during dusk and dawn times, following the speed limit and not swerving if you think you might hit a deer.
"Don't try to avoid it. That's where a lot of the accidents become more severe," Joffer said.
Luckily, Joffer says they haven't seen any severe accidents for a while.
Game, Fish & Park officials say around the Sioux Falls area they're seeing a deer over-population problem.
