The state is encouraging hunters to donate deer to the Sportsmen Against Hunger program, which has provided more than 345,000 pounds of meat to food banks since 1993.

Up to $50 of the processing costs are covered for female deer and antelope. The meat is ground up and distributed to needy families.

The state Wildlife Division offers special license combinations designed to reduce a deer herd that's been growing for eight years.

A record 91,000 deer were shot by hunters last year. More than 2,100 were donated to the Sportsman Against Hunger program.
