Young, but talented is becoming a common description for the SDSU wrestling team. Thirteen of the 20 grapplers on the Jacks' roster are sophomores or younger, meaning a majority of the squad is still getting a crash course in Division One wrestling.
The young Jacks finished 9-11-1 last year, but were winless in the Western Wrestling Conference. For that to change, head coach Jason Liles says his team will have to mature in a hurry.
"Our young kids need to see and get exposed to that high level right away, and know what they have to compete against so they can be ready for the end of the year," Liles said. "And with the group of guys we have, they have that moxy and qualities that you want."
The team's best wrestler is senior Tyler Sorenson. Last year, the Garretson native became the second Jackrabbit to qualify for the Divison I national tournament. And Liles says the stage is set for a great farewell campaign.
"He does have a little swagger to him now that I think is based on the success he had last year," admits Liles. "He knows this is a big year for him. You don't set it up any better for a senior. You host a qualifier in your own gym, and three hours aways is your national tournament. It doesn't get any better than that."
The Jacks will get the season started with the annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open at Frost Arena on Saturday, November 7. They'll open the dual portion of their schedule on Thursday, November 12 when they visit No. 2 Iowa State.
