MBK: USF 63, Dakota State 47
In their 2009 home opener, the No. 23 ranked University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team (1-1) defeated Dakota State University (1-1) 63-47 on Friday night at the Stewart Center.
Junior Matt Malloy (Parkston, S.D.) scored a career-high 27 points, while going 9-18 from the floor and 7-10 from the free-throw line.
With 6:07 to play in the first half the Trojans led 18-16 but USF held DSU without a point for the next 4:27, while scoring 13 point of their own to take a 29-18 lead. The Cougars held the lead at halftime 32-23.
During the first 4:13 of the second half the Cougars scored 12 points and once again held the Trojans scoreless. The 12-0 run gave USF their largest lead of the contest, 45-23. For the remainder of the game, the Cougars were able to maintain their advantage and ended up with the 16 point victory.
For the game, USF shot 38.2 percent (21-55) while outrebounding DSU 47-34.
Next up for the Cougar men is a rematch with Mayville State University, who defeated the Cougars 70-67 last Saturday in Mayville, N.D. Tip-off will be tomorrow night, November 7, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Stewart Center.
WBK: USF 80, York 70
Sophomores Elizabeth Hildreth (Norwalk, Iowa) and Becky Christofferson (Summit, SD) both had 17 points in a 80-70 victory over York College (1-1) tonight in York, Neb. Sophomore Jamey Hofer (Hartford, SD) added 11 points and four rebounds of her own. It is the first victory for the Cougars (1-1) of the young 2009-2010 season.
USF and York College battled throughout the first half, with the Cougars holding a two point advantage (36-34) at the half-way break. Christofferson hit two three-pointers as part of her ten points in the first 20 minutes.
The Panthers held the score close throughout most of the second half, but USF was aided by making nearly 50% from the floor. With the score tied 65-65 late in the second half, the Cougars made their move and took over the game. USF rallied to pull away from the Panthers with a 15-5 run over the last five minutes.
No. 15 USF, coming off a disappointing loss to Dakota State University, increased their shooting percentage from the floor tremendously in their second game by making 42% of their field goals, up 8% from Tuesday.
USF will have their home opener next Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 pm against College of Saint Mary (0-3).
