Sisseton quarterback Ryan Toelle threw for a state record 595 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Redmen to a stunning 48-47 win over top-ranked West Central. Toelle also ran for two scores and the game-winning two-point conversion. Sisseton head coach Scott Hagen said it was the kind of effort he'd been waiting for all season.
"We've been a very consistenly inconsistent team all year. We told them if we could ever put four quarters together we could play with anybody in the state," explained Hagen. "Everything just kind of fell together. And it was just one of those games that the kid had a career night."
Sisseton will face Milbank in Monday's quarterfinals, and Hagen said he's already told his players to put Tuesday's win behind them.
"You see it week in and week out, not only in college but professional teams, they get a big marquee win and the next week they come out just flat as a pancake," Hagen said. "We stressed to our kids before they left last nihgt that we do not want that to happen. We put ourselves in this position and we need to keep ourselves here."
Monday will mark the second meeting between Sisseton and Milbank this season. The Bulldogs beat the Redmen 37-23, in Sisseton, on August 28.
