October is usually the month for harvest and preparing for the winter ahead, but like the previous two years, this October didn't allow much time to prepare anything outdoors. For the third October in a row, Sioux Falls has seen above average rainfall.
In fact, the last three Octobers the city has received over 4 inches each year for a total that's over 15 inches. We've never had three consecutive Octobers with over 3 inches.
Some other interesting stats show that the last three October rains combined are more than our wettest spring of just under 15 inches and our wettest autumn of 12-and-two-thirds of an inch. These are amazing totals considering the average rain in Sioux Falls for October is just under 2 inches.
When it wasn't raining this month, it still seems the clouds were hard to shed and those cloudy skies have also led to below average temperatures. Tuesday was a rare October day with some areas getting above average highs.
Not including Tuesday, Rapid City leads the list with above average highs this month with three while Sioux Falls, Mitchell and Watertown have only had one.
We'll end the month with more of the same. Cool air and wet conditions are in the forecast, so let's hope for a drier November.
