The calendar may say Fall but Thursday's Black Hills snow didn't arrive any sooner than usual.
The snow in western KELOLAND is a reminder of the blizzard that hit the west in early November of last year. The 2008 storm brought brought nine inches to Rapid City and more than four feet in the Hills. Strong winds combined with the heavy snow closed roads in the west and destroyed power poles and power lines, knocking out electricity.
Though Thursday's system wasn't as dramatic, it does remind us that winter weather often shows up in the fall. Most years, Rapid City sees about two inches in October. But it's a different story in the Hills; Lead averages a foot and a half.
Thursday's snow is just the start, especially in Lead, which sees an average of 200 inches during the winter.
